Last year I did something you're not really supposed to do in polite company. I fulfilled a New Year's resolution.
Specifically, at the start of 2013 I set myself a goal of watching (at least) 150 movies and set myself the following rules:
- Must be feature length or a curated collection of short films
- A full *season* of a TV show counts as one film
- If watched on TV, no commercial breaks, change in aspect ratio / runtime etc.
- Must note date watched and include at least one sentence comment in film journal.
- Can be my first viewing or my tenth - as long as it’s my first viewing in 2013, it counts.
For around the first 40 or so, I stuck to each and every rule, writing up my impressions of films in my nice, leather-bound journal. But after a while I got behind, promising myself I'd catch up until I realized that I was too far behind. But I kept going and I kept watching and learning and had a wonderfully rich year of experiencing beautiful, terrible, witty, disturbing, heart-warming and highly diverse motion picture storytelling.
So my goal for this year is to watch and blog another 150 films and so I’m resurrecting this blog which I started and almost immediately forgot in late 2010. I’m doing this primarily for my own education and edification, so I reserve the right to write literally only one sentence if I’m too tired, busy or distracted to write more - even if it’s a movie that I could write an essay about. The point here really is to be disciplined about film-watching, to hit that quota and to have as much fun and learn as much as I can while doing it.
