"Philomena" is the real-life story of Philomena Lee, one of the Irish Catholic church's 'Magdalene girls,' whose son was adopted against her will in the 1950's.
Judi Dench is once again incredible, disappearing into the role of Philomena with real respect for the woman she is portraying. Steve Coogan holds his own as former BBC journalist and Blairite spin doctor Martin Sixsmith who is at times wincingly condescending and arrogant but still very human.
Director Stephen Frears takes what sounds like perfect material for a Lifetime Original Movie and crafts a film that is funny, moving and even outraged while always respecting his audience's intelligence and emotional understanding.
